Naturopathic medicine is a natural approach to health and healing that recognizes the integrity of the whole person. It emphasises the treatment of disease through stimulation, enhancement, and support of the inherent healing capacity of the individual being treated. It uses only natural substances to treat the patient. Naturopathic Medicine emerges from six underlying principles of healing: The inherent Healing Power of Nature, Identify and Treat the Cause (as opposed to the symptoms), First Do No Harm, Treat the Whole Person, Phyiscian as Teacher, and Prevention. It is these principles that distinguish the profession from other medical approaches. Naturopathy may include clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, physical therapy, hydrotherapy, massage therapy, exercise recommendation, lifestyle counseling, oriental medicine, naturopathic obstetrics, psychology, and minor surgery. Naturopathic medicine treats the patient from the preventive stage through to serious, chronic or debilitative diseases.
